The journey

A 33-day consecration, starting today

St. Louis de Montfort taught the shortest and safest way to Jesus: through Mary.

Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is the complete gift of oneself — body, soul, goods and merits — to Jesus Christ, through the hands of the Virgin Mary, following the method St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort himself described in his Treatise on the True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin (1712). It is the same path that, two and a half centuries later, inspired St. John Paul II’s motto "Totus Tuus" ("All Yours").

The preparation follows three weeks of seven days each — Knowledge of Self, Knowledge of Mary, Knowledge of Jesus Christ — preceded by 12 preliminary days of detachment from the spirit of the world, and ends on the day of consecration itself: confession, communion and the formula of self-giving, in full.

Count back 33 days from whichever Marian feast you choose — the Assumption (August 15), the Rosary (October 7) or the Immaculate Conception (December 8) — and start that day. It works in any year: tradition recognizes 33-day windows ending on different Marian feasts.

Each day has a guided reading with Montfort’s text, a short meditation and the Way of the Day — Perceive, Decide, Live. The book carries the whole journey, with room to track your progress — in Kindle and paperback, on Amazon.

✦
From Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary

“It was through Mary that Jesus Christ came into the world, and it is also through her that He must reign in the world.”

✦

Everything God willed in the order of grace, He gives, and wills to give, through Mary. Through her Jesus came to us; through her we must go to Him. This is the shortest, safest and most perfect way to reach Jesus — the path that, generations later, a Pope would sum up in two words: "Totus Tuus".

Where each prayer comes from

The order of the 33 days comes from Montfort’s own Treatise (nos. 227 to 233). The prayers for each stage are the ones he names, such as the Veni Creator, the Ave Maris Stella and the Litany of Loreto, all in the public domain, and the act of consecration is the saint’s own. The meditations are our own writing.

I was having a severe crisis of Faith at the beginning of this novena, due to many misfortunes such as illness. Those misfortunes still exist; but my Faith has been rejuvenated, and is much stronger than before.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this idolatry — do you worship Mary as if she were God?+
No. Worship (the honor given only to God) and veneration (the honor we give Mary and the saints) have always been different things in the Church — no one prays the Our Father to Mary, or offers the Mass to her. Consecrating yourself to Mary means entrusting yourself to a mother’s care so you can draw closer to Jesus, exactly as Jesus himself, from the Cross, entrusted John to her care (John 19:26-27). The end of everything is still God; Mary is the way, not the destination.
Mary isn’t a mediator — Jesus alone is the one Mediator (1 Tim 2:5), so why do I need her?+
1 Timothy 2:5 is correct: Jesus is the one Mediator between God and men — the Church teaches this without ambiguity. Mary’s mediation is of a completely different and subordinate kind: she does not replace Jesus, she leads us to Him, like a mother holding her child’s hand to cross the street. It is the same logic as asking a friend to pray for you — except Mary is the mother God himself chose to give us (John 19:27).
Doesn’t this become a fad — a necklace or chain just to show off on social media, without changing anything inside?+
It can, if a person stops at the symbol — but the symbol is never the rite itself. The chain (or medal, or rosary in the pocket) is only a physical reminder of an inner surrender; without that inner surrender, the object is worth nothing. Montfort himself warns: whoever only keeps the outward practice "has no taste except for the exterior of this devotion, because he has no interior spirit of his own."
I was already consecrated as a child, by my mother or godmother — do I need to do it again?+
Yes, it is worth doing — and it is not a repetition. The consecration made by someone else in your name when you were a child was a passive act of love, made by someone who represented you. The adult consecration is active: a personal, conscious, free choice — yours. These are different things, and the second neither cancels nor repeats the first — it takes it up and makes it your own.
I missed a day (or several) of the preparation — do I need to start all over again?+
You don’t need to be perfect, you need to be faithful. The 12+21-day division is not a rigid, unbreakable rule — the very text that accompanies the method says the periods can be lengthened or shortened according to each person’s circumstances. If you miss a day, the simplest thing is to continue from where you stopped (or catch up on the missed reading the next day) — what matters is arriving at the end with your heart surrendered, not keeping a perfect calendar.
Can I do this alone, at home, or do I need a priest, a group or a parish?+
You can do it alone, at home, with the book and the formula of consecration — it is not a sacrament, it does not require a priest or a group. Ideally, when possible, go to confession and receive Communion close to the day of consecration (as the method itself recommends), but this can also be done at your regular parish, with no special ceremony.
Once it’s done, do I need to renew it every year? Or is it "forever" and that’s that?+
The consecration is made once, for a lifetime — but Montfort himself recommends renewing it, at least once a year, on the same day. It is not "starting from zero": it is like renewing wedding vows — the commitment already exists, the renewal just keeps it alive and conscious. Some people renew it monthly or even daily, with a short phrase ("I am all thine...").
What really changes in my life afterward — isn’t it just a symbolic act we forget tomorrow?+
It changes for real, if it is lived — and Montfort himself describes concrete effects: greater trust in God, deeper interior peace, less scruple and servile fear, a deeper way of loving Jesus, "formed" in you through Mary’s action. It is not automatic magic; it is a path that continues after day 33, sustained by renewal and by the ordinary life of prayer (Mass, sacraments, daily prayer).
